The First 3Point Award to Respect Consistent Contemporary Photographers

Last Saturday (10/8), the 2011 3Point Award photo exhibition was officially opened for public. Taking place at the house of Kelas Pagi Yogyakarta (KPY), Prawirodirjan, Yogyakarta, the exhibition presented three series of contemporary photography works by three young photographers—Doni Maulistya, Dito Yuwono, and Seto Hari Wibowo. The award and photo exhibition is presented by the collaboration of KPY, Lembaga Indonesia Perancis/LIP (Centre Culturel Francais/CCF), and Mes56—a leading contemporary photography community based in Yogyakarta.
Giving a speech during the opening ceremony, Doni Maulistya revealed that the award and the exhibition emphasizes not merely on the final result, but more on the creative process. “Hence, we highly hope that all visitors actively interact with us—the three photographers—to share the process we’ve gone through,” he suggested.
Been held for the first time ever, the 2011 3Point Award is presented to young contemporary photographers to respect and appreciate their consistency and activity in contemporary photography. This year’s award-winning photographers will then be the juries and curators for the coming year’s award giving. The award and photo exhibition is presented also to commemorate the Month of Photos to hold on November by LIP/CCF.

Angki Purbandono, a renowned Indonesian contemporary photographer, who acted as this year’s curator (while members of Mes56 became the juries), emphasized that the award is the process the photographers has undergone themselves. “They (the photographers) presented their concept first, followed by next process which includes a 6-month sharing and other technical preparation,” he explained to Exposure magazine. “During the process, even in the curatorial phase, the photographers were actively involved.”

The result of the concept and process is then displayed in the photo exhibition; each artist presented their own unique, distinctive works. Doni Maulistya presented “Sudah Saatnya (It’s Time)”—a series of photographs depicting his effort of freeing himself from his hyper-communal family, Dito Yuwono came with a series of close-up portrait photos entitled “Have We Met?”, while Seto Hari Wibowo presented “Di Belakang (Behind)” which depicted a family’s kitchen as an intimate spot on the house.

Speaking about next year’s award, Angki said, “We hope that this year’s winners will share their experience and process with the future winners.” Angki also optimistically said that the award aims to go national and even international. Hence, next year’s awarding and photo exhibition will take place in other potential cities. The 2011 3Point Award photo exhibition will be open for public to October 31.
